Eight friends trapped together on a remote mountain retreat, and they aren’t alone. Gripped by dread, with tensions running high, they must fight through their fear if they all hope to make through the night in one piece. Play as each of the eight characters and experience fear like you never have before. Every decision you make in your terrifying search for answers could mean the difference between life and death, but for whom? Your actions alone will decide who survives Until Dawn.
First off, I was very much impressed with the whole graphics and acting, amazing job on that. The game controls are simple, intuitive and effective, and the movement is very fluid and smooth. The graphics, like I stated are amazing, straight from the facial textures to the snow falling, the lighting and shadows, this game really takes advantage of this latest generation of consoles to bring out detail and atmosphere. The music is an additional bonus, it is very atmospheric and extremely well integrated into the action.
The developers created a game with the look and feel of a real horror movie mixed with a lot of mystery. You find yourself constantly looking for clues to unveil the area’s history or the details of who is pursuing you. The dialogue can be a bit hit or miss, but the general story arc and background details are very well done. The game starts with each character occupying a pretty standard stereotype, such as jock, comic, dumb girl, etc. I quickly grew attached to everyone, as the writers give each character a lot of depth. Deciding their choices throughout the game also tailors them to how YOU want to play. If you see a character cheat on her boyfriend, you have the option to tell that boyfriend or to side with the girl, for example.
Seriously, if you’re on the fence about the horror element but you like games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Fallout for the choices they give you, you have to try Until Dawn. Simple decisions like whether you leave a bat in the basement or take it with you, whether you take a shortcut or the long and safe route, whether you trip as you’re running or respond perfectly, whether you escalate a disagreement with someone or make amends; these decisions impact what happens later. It’s hard to keep every character alive, but it’s possible.
As I already stated, the facial animations in this game are unparalleled. Very, very well done and the “making of Until Dawn” section of the game shows just how much work went into this. I’m a total wuss when it comes to horror, but I ended up loving the scary moments immensely. The game is relentless with the jump scares also, particularly the first half of the game, and each one left me laughing and relieved afterward. The action moments tied to these fights, such as chases or fights, are really well done, too.
The writing, however, felt a little off because some of the characters stayed a little too close to the stereotype they were supposed to fulfill, like the “sleazy girl” or “bitchy girlfriend.” These characters should have been given more depth if you ask me. This is no doubt one of my favorite games now, and I’m about to play through yet again and make different decisions to see how that changes how the game plays out even more. I managed to keep 5 of them alive this time. Highly recommended!
