The Evil Within 2 (2017)

From Shinji Mikami, The Evil Within 2 takes the acclaimed franchise to a new level with its unique blend of psychological thrills and true survival horror. Sebastian Castellanos has lost everything, including his daughter, Lily. To save her, he’s forced to partner with Mobius, the shadowy group responsible for the destruction of his former life. For his last chance at redemption, the only way out is in.

I have to tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Seriously, everything about it is way above my expectations, and that coming from someone that played the first one and was very disappointed. The story is moving and really sucks you in. It won’t take you long to find yourself mentally exploring many possibilities about the characters. You get 17 full chapters of this awesome game, yet you are still left wanting more. It’s just that amazing.

No joke, the game is everything you would want in a game. The game developers delivered an incredible game along with a kick-ass soundtrack. The monsters are just as messed up as in the first game but harder to take down, and that’s great if you ask me. You might even recognize a few of them while you’re playing.

The overall mapping is incredibly smooth, which means you should have no issues whatsoever while playing except a few minor frame drops at certain points, but then again, that could have been on my side, but I haven’t encountered any other glitches to speak of.

(2017) The Evil Within 2 Gameplay Video Still

There are many parts in this game that put me on the edge of my seat with heart racing and palms sweating. The zombies had a comical look to them with the glowing red eyes and all, and some were downright challenging as hell to get around such as the gas lady that screams but overall can be taken down. The enemies, however, seem to be the only thing that was a bit lacking, unlike The Evil Within 1, which had extremely memorable monsters.

Also, an important thing to mention for people like me who prefer the first-person view over third-person view, a recent patch allows you to play in the first person which works pretty well, my only complaint is that you can’t see when your character is performing certain animation at times which restricts your movement.

Oh, there is one invincible boss that did leave a good impression and that is the ghostly Onryu Anima. After you encounter her she ends up chasing you from time to time, but unfortunately, this creature is only optional and can be avoided the entire game, which is really messed up in my opinion. You have this great and memorable monster that ends up being only optional. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

One thing I wish they would have carried on with is the figurine gallery that gives you a background as to who the enemies were and how they were created in the STEM system. Aside from that the game is great and serves as a decent sequel to the original.

Overall, I would highly recommend this game whether you played the first one or not. If you have played the first game I think you’ll only appreciate the sequel even more in all honesty. It’s worth the buy. Even if you don’t end up buying it on sale you fully get your money’s worth with this game.

About the Game:

  • A story of Redemption – Return to the nightmare to win back your life and your daughter
  • Discover Horrifying Domains – Explore as far or quickly as you dare, but prepare wisely
  • Face Disturbing Enemies – Survive encounters with sadistic enemies and twisted creatures
  • Choose How to Survive – Attack from the shadows, run like hell, or go in guns-blazing with very limited ammo
  • Visceral Horror and Suspense – Enter a world filled with anxiety-inducing thrills and disturbing moments
