Remothered: Tormented Fathers (2018)
Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a third-person psychological horror game, and the first chapter of Chris Darril’s long-awaited Remothered trilogy, it is the first game made by Darril Arts with a joint partnership with Stormind Games. The game was released in the Early Access phase on October 21, 2017, for PC via Steam, the full game was released on January 30th, 2018, a year after the game was first announced. The game will also be available on the console for PlayStation 4 and XboxOne on July 25th, 2018.
Remothered: Tormented Fathers is pretty much everything you would want in a survival horror game, as it’s actually very impressive in both its graphics, narrative, and game-play. It’s also the first game in what is planned to be a trilogy. It seems like most people enjoyed this game because the whole style and atmosphere were so reminiscent of the genre.
However, a few of the complaints some people are about the game design in general, and the fact that there’s no map so you have to go back and forth over the same areas to find and transport items. I personally didn’t find that part to be much of an issue though, I kind of felt like it was more realistic as you just gain access to new areas as you go along.
It would seem that all of the characters are suffering from an identity loss, or at least the loss of their memories, Rosemary, who is the character you will be playing in this game, being the worst case. We learn towards the ending that Rosemary is not who she claimed to be, and she can’t remember the events of the fire at the farm either.
A tape recording we hear of another character implies that she has also lost her memory, and has returned to the house to find answers about who she really is. You could easily tie this back into the overarching narrative presented by Madame Svenska, who talks about names and memories.
To really understand what’s going on with the story in Remothered: Tormented Fathers, you need to do a bit of detective work. There aren’t very many of the notes scattered throughout the game but that you do discover disclose something extremely significant. To get that full picture of what’s really going on you have to find these notes keep a close track on who is who, as well as a timeline of events and what motivates everyone in your head. You do however pick up everything you need to know about the story as you move along, and everything else is clearly meant to be revealed at a later time.
If you read all of the collectibles Remothered: Tormented Fathers, then you will get a clear understanding of the characters and the backstory. The only thing I never understood was why Rosemary’s connection to Celeste, and her determination to find her, that brought her to the mansion in the first place. In short, you will really appreciate and enjoy this game as it’s up there with the best of its genre!
