State of Decay 2

How Will You Survive? The dead have risen and civilization has fallen. Not even the military could stop the zombies, and now it’s up to you to gather survivors and build a community with your friends in a post-apocalyptic world – a world where every decision matters, and where you define what it means to survive. Your Choices Define Your Survival Story. Xbox One and Windows 10 PC exclusive.

State of Decay 2 is developed by Undead Labs and published by Microsoft Studios. The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 4. The game was announced on June 13, 2016, at Microsoft’s E3 Xbox briefing. The game was scheduled to be released in 2017 for Windows 10 and the Xbox One video game console. At Microsoft’s E3 2017 Xbox briefing, it was announced that the game would release in Spring 2018. Additionally, the game will also be available to play at no cost to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at the game’s release, as with all forthcoming Microsoft Studios titles. State of Decay will also be sold as an Xbox Play-Anywhere title, as well as cross-play support between Windows 10 and Xbox players.

First off, I want to say that I loved the first State of Decay, it was a huge success and I was completely excited to see that Xbox was funding a follow up to it. If it wasn’t for so many minor bugs, the game would completely suck you in and make you so addicted you won’t want to stop playing it. Once you get into it and get your team into a cohesive unit with set specialties and get a good rotation going it starts to get better, and then it eats up a lot of your time.

The sequel takes the core gameplay of the first, adds extra depth and puts added polish on with the help of the switch to unreal engine. Like I stated already, there are still some minor bugs, zombie popping in is most noticeable. There’s another to where my characters face was random colors. Generally, these are more amusing than frustrating. If you’re looking for an intense post-apocalyptic zombie game, this is one you can consider. Among some of the things you can achieve with State of Decay 2 is scavenging, encountering hordes upon hordes of zombies, meet a few people that might just become your friends, meet asswipe and hostile strangers, build a killer base and many other cool things.

One of the things I had an issue with is, there really isn’t much of a tutorial or Help section for the game, so you’ll probably end up getting a little frustrated at first trying to progress and figure out how to do things within your community. Enlisting followers at your own base is pretty hard. It should be a lot easier to find people and ask them to come to base or to run missions with you. Too much time wasted running around trying to figure out where others are. You will no doubt end up on Youtube or Reddit searching for help. Still, that’s not so much of a deal breaker. - State of Decay 2 - Game Review

As of this writing this review, there is also a bug where supplies and resources cannot be obtained and everyone dies, or your companion(s) just disappear on you and you’re left alone too. The frame rate is another small issue, as it stutters kind really bad intense enemies attacks. To be fair though, Microsoft did try to help but they can only handle Xbox related issues, and this seems to be more of a developer. The developer has a small and VERY poor support system. They try to push the issues back to Microsoft. You have no choice but to wait for bug fixes and personally, I’m seriously unsure if they even know they exist.

The whole point of the game is straightforward, kill the plague hearts, complete your leader’s legacy quest and win the game. This can certainly get repetitive after the first time through, although there will still be some new mini quests that pop up with your subsequent survivor communities. Graphically the game is just ok, definitely nothing mind-blowing. And finally, probably the one fault of the game that bugs me the most is the voice acting. The developer definitely skimped on this and the little bits we get are repetitive, poorly acted and often times comical. You’d think survivors of a zombie apocalypse would have more emotional range. - State of Decay 2 - Game Review

I took away one star because of the issues I experienced, but all in all, I think the game is still worth buying, maybe wait for a sale for now, or at least until someone works out all the annoying bugs. The game is definitely rough around the edges still, but hopefully, the developers will be committed to improving them. I’m also really looking forward to the two announced DLC packs which will hopefully keep me coming back after the base game has gotten stale. If you’re a fan of killing zombies, you won’t want to pass this one up.
