Mom and Dad
A teenage girl and her little brother try to survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origins causes parents to turn violently on their own children. Mom & Dad is a 2017 horror comedy film written and directed by Brian Taylor. The film stars Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair. It premiered in the Midnight Madness section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was released on January 19, 2018, by Momentum Pictures. The film received generally positive reviews from critics.
Definitely, something terrible is happening on in the peaceful suburban community as, one day to another, former loving and caring parents mysteriously turn into ravenous carriers of an unfathomable pandemic that targets their offspring. Suddenly, every son and daughter (not only in the neighborhood but also in the entire nation) must to run for their lives, as the rage-filled murderous intent is simply as unstoppable as it is inexplicable. Of course, Brent and Kendall’s teenage children are no exception, and before long, the simmering but usual familial tensions will take a completely different meaning. Kids, stop hiding. Mum and Dad love you so much.
Mom and Dad is an interesting, and very twisted phycological horror movie starring one of my favorite actors, Nickolas Cage, who is hilariously over-the-top. To me, this is another one of Cage’s best performances. The movie isn’t supposed to be taken seriously at all, and he plays that well into it. You can tell he’s having a blast playing the role of Brent Ryan, the bored-of-his-life and family CEO father. It’s also fun watching him become unhinged and do some pretty funny and hilarious things, such as completely destroying, piece by piece his beloved pool table that he ‘just’ put together. Cage made that scene very engaging and tense.
Selma Blair is very on point, as well. Selma plays Brent’s amazingly insane wife in the film. You don’t really see Selma Blair all that much these days, and that is a real shame because she’s a lovely and very talented actress. She’s no doubt great here as she plays her part as the bored housewife turned psycho mother. The casting of their kids was just as good. The main younger characters were written and set-up so that you start to dislike some of these teenagers from the very beginning.
The story itself has good pace and crazy events that build up great and keeps you well interested. The only thing I see that’s sort of flawed is with its lack of explanation and reasoning for the sudden events that begin this mass parent-against-their-children violence. I was also rather disappointed a bit by the lack at the conclusion with it leaving an overall feeling of emptiness over what had great potential to be a really great film, something that is becoming more and more rare these days.
You also have XYZ films that helped make this movie. If you recall, they were involved with other amazing hits like Bushwick and Beyond Skyline, so this is what really got my hopes up for this movie. So, I must admit, this film is pretty amazing for what it is. Nicholas Cage goes bat-shit crazy in this film and it’s incredible to watch. Playing this part had to be amazing, especially for him. Also, the film is not all that family-friendly in any way what-so-ever, despite the cleverly innocent title “Mom and Dad”. This is not a film for everyone. It’s very crazy, and appropriately well shot and I will definitely recommend it to anyone.
