At the Gates – To Drink from the Night Itself

To Drink from the Night Itself is the sixth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates, released on 18 May 2018 via Century Media. The album is the first to feature guitarist Jonas Stålhammar and the first without co-founding guitarist Anders Björler, who had departed from the band in March 2017.

Coming 4 years after the release of At War with Reality, their first studio album in 19 years, and following the departure of original member and lead guitarist Anders Björler, At the Gates announced To Drink from the Night Itself. The band brought in Jonas Stålhammar (Bombs of Hades, God Macabre, The Lurking Fear) as Björler’s replacement.

(2018) At the Gates – To Drink from the Night Itself Photo Still

In the build-up to the release of At The Gates’ sixth full-length, To Drink From The Night Itself, there appeared to be a split in the metal community. We had the new At The Gates group, and then we had the Slaughter of the Soul crowd wondering why they were still making music. What the latter have ignored is just how damn good 2014’s At War With Reality really was. It was arguably the greatest comeback album in the genre with an incredible record that managed to keep with their history without rehashing too much old material.

After At The Gates reformed, most fans were left wondering whether there would be any new music. With clarity of production that simply wasn’t possible in their first coming, At War With Reality was replete with bangers such as “The Circular Ruins”, “Eater of Gods” and “Upon Pillars of Dust” as it showcased their razor-sharp riffs, trademark aggression, and excellent songwriting. Given the 19 years between albums, it was quite a feat, and after a comparatively short four-year wait we have a new full-length to dive head-first into.

To Drink From The Night Itself was recorded at three studios. The vocals were captured by Per Stålberg and Olle Björk at Welfare Studios in Gothenburg over a three-week period, while the rest of the music—drums, bass, and guitar—were recorded by producer Russ Russell at Parlour Recording Studios in the UK over a two-week session. The strings—cello, violin, and double bass—were then tracked by Martin Jacobson at Rovljud Studios in Örebro. The entire effort was produced by Björler, Lindberg, and Russell over three weeks, with Russell taking an additional two weeks to mix and master.

Candlemass have come full circle: their first singer Johan Langquist (who left the band after singing on the legendary 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus) has returned!
