Dimmu Borgir – Eonian
Eonian is the tenth studio album by Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir, which was released on May 4, 2018. Production of Eonian originally started at least in 2012 but faced many delays for years after. However, it was given an eventual official release date of May 4, 2018, which ended up being their first original studio album in nearly 8 years following 2010’s Abrahadabra. The band self-produced the album while the engineering was handled by Jens Bogren. Dimmu Borgir had to re-sign to their current label Nuclear Blast and reflect on communication during the eight-year gap. During this gap, three of the band members became fathers and focused on their family life. When describing the album’s sound, Silenoz stated that the symphonic metal parts are more symphonic while the black metal sound of Dimmu is more black metal this time around.
It’s been 8 long years since the release of their last album and the wait was damn well worth it. This album without a doubt will remind you of the older Dimmu Borgir albums, and that’s a good thing. It’s epic and beautifully done. There is a lot of symphonies blended into this album, as has been on other albums. With Abrahadabra, there were a few songs I would always skip over in order to get to the better songs that I actually enjoyed but with this album I find myself listening to it in its entirety from start to finish. I believe this album is as close to perfect as this band has been in a long time.

Silenoz said about Eonian: “We feel that we’re sitting on the album that we could possibly do, and I think it’s our best album to date. Obviously, that’s something that everybody says, but if I did not believe that we would do our best album, there would not be any point in doing a new one. So, yeah, I’m really excited about it, and I know that quite a few fans will probably be positively surprised.”
About the musical direction, Silenoz said: “I think it’s safe to say that the epic and majestic are more epic and majestic, and the same goes for the brutal sound of Dimmu and also the primitive and more black metal. The sound on this one is more black metal this time around. So you will have the more extremes of each part that we are known for.”
Honestly, I feel that every track on Eonian is amazing, and more so than some of their past albums. Eonian is just a damn good album overall. The Eight years it took for this album no doubt ended up being well worth it. I love choirs in metal, and the band has embraced it to the fullest!

The first single from the album, ‘Interdimensional Summit’ was released on February 23, 2018, on 7-inch vinyl with an accompanying promotional video.
